Big Open Break
Title Sequence Project
Big Open Break is a fictional sci-fi mystery television series.
While vacationing with their families on Rocoa Island, Carlos, Julia, Nathan, and their classmates venture into the rainforest on a field trip. Their adventure quickly turns south when they find themselves lost in the heart of an unforgiving jungle. With no radio systems working, their only hope appears when they stumble across a hidden drug lab. Strange occurrences in the cave next door force the unlikely group to uncover a hidden research facility deep beneath the surface.
Questions ensue as the facility's research is explored and science morphs into a monster far more dangerous than illegal substances. Adventures and horrors alike puts the truth in the hands of eight children and their will to survive.
This project was created using After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Theme music is Bees by Farrell Wooten. All outsourced images are credited here.
Initial Storyboarding
The initial storyboard focuses on literal imagery defining the setting and characters, then evenutally abstracting into a science-y fungal world. Viewers feel lost but anxious to learn more as they begin the episode.
Experimenting with Motion
These first experiments explore threshholds and clipping masks to create abstract imagery.
Motion Test
First attempts at creating linear shot sequences with audio. This test incorporates more literal imagery.
Footage Collection & Color Correction
Over 60 shots were filmed during the course of one week in Savannah, Georgia. They focus on nature, islands, and an "old money" aesthetic.
Selected shots were then color-corrected to create a cold mysterious effect.
Static Media Collection & Creation
Using free documents from the ResearchGate & the National Archives, static images were collaged and arranged in After Effects' 3D space.
Initial Cuts
Initial attempt at piecing together full title sequence without refinements.
